Does anyone know why only a text file is generated rather than both a text file and a edat file?

If only a .txt file is generated after an experiment, then this is likely due to an error or aborting the experiment with the Ctrl+Alt+Shift prompt.  The errors would most typically involve a runtime error such as "attribut not found", etc.  Any information on the runtime error you might be receiving during the run would help track down the problem.

If you are left with only the .txt file, you can retreive as much information as possible using the E-Recovery application.

I'm also getting a problem that .edat files are not created. This is not fatal, as a .txt file is created, which E-Recovery is able to convert to an .edat file.  At the end of the experiment I get a message saying "Error occurred reading text file - unexpected end of file" then giving a line number, which is the final line in the .txt file (which reads "*** LogFrame End ***") and the error number 10

The lack of edat conversion at the end of an experiment is typically due to aborting prior to experiment completion.  If the experiment completes and you get an error it is then most likely due to an object or attribute or log level somewhere in the system being named in conflict with a reserved word.  For example, if you named an attribute Block or Trial or "c".  In those cases, the runtime should generate an error indicating the conflict.  If it does not, then the error may be due to a character it does not recognize or treats as special.  If you can attach an experiment here or web support with steps to replicate it can be analyzed further.

Hi - I am also having the problem that the .edat file is not produced on occassions. It is not due to the experiment being aborted or a runtime error. The experiment has successfully run to conclusion several times previously, but for some reason on the odd random occassion the edat file is not produced. Are there any other possible reasons for this?

I reviewed Paul Warren's experiment and there is nothing glaring that would cause the error.  When this occurs, there is no edat file, but what about the E-Recovery .txt file?  If it is there you can recover the data up until the experiment ending point.  Paul, are you indicating that the edat file is not found or your custom .dat file you are writing to during the experiment.  If it is the .edat file, then does your .dat write out to completion?

Thanks Brendon

the custom .dat file completes, as does the .txt file. But there is no .edat file

If you run the .txt file through E-Recovery does it create an edat file for you?  Note that edat is in progress to changing to edat2 for E-Prime 2.  The file formats are interchangable, but to avoid conflict with overwriting files between versions, the edat2 came to life.

If you are not getting an error, I am not aware of any reason why an edat file would not appear (outside of redirecting where the edat file is generated)KB1073 - FEATURE: Ability to specify location path for data file with E-DataPath environment variable

I signed on because I began having the same problem just this week.  Previously, data had been converted correctly.  Now, all I get are the .txt files.  Is there some but that materialized this week?  Even though the .txt files can be recovered, this is time consuming!
